Fun Ways to Earn Points

Horizons High School student, Ryan Harju, describes a green task that students do, "Around the school when students are done using computers or leave the classroom, we make sure all the electronics and appliances are unplugged, and the lights are off."

Michigan Wildlife Awareness

The spotted turtle is a threatened species in Michigan. The Michigan DNR lists the spotted turtle as a species of special concern in our state. Our neighboring Canadian province, Ontario, has also sounded the alarm bell for this gentle turtle that reportedly never bites and is a shy creature.

Under the Michigan Green School 20 Points, a school may adopt a spotted turtle and release it in the spring to one of its favorite places – a stream, marsh or pond – and help increase the numbers of the turtle.

Perhaps in the near future Michigan can remove the turtle from its list of special concern species like Massachusetts was able to do with conservation efforts. All species are interconnected, and saving the turtle helps other creatures as well in the web of life.

More activity tips:

  • school can hold a naming contest for their adopted animal
  • students can go on a field trip to visit a Nature Center or Zoo to learn more about reptiles and amphibians
  • students can create a bulletin board display showing the "web of life"

Michigan Green Schools are creative in their approach to protecting our natural heritage

Mancelona Elementary students are preparing to release 5000 baby brook trout in their waterways. One of the twenty points of Michigan Green Schools is to adopt a threatened or endangered species which Mancelona took another step further with their fish adoption of these fry which may not be endangered but are important part of the web of life in our environment.
